CANACONA: The Chapoli Dam, the lifeline of Canconcar fills up as its Reservour overflows from its Spillage on Monday morning.
Chapoli Dam attained its overall capacity of 38.75 RL (reduced level) after filling its Storage capacity of 1127.21 Ham at 11.25 am when the dam water began to spill over the Spill-way at the norther-end of the Dam’s Reservoir.
Incidentally, the half-a-kilometre Chapoli dam with a height of 38.75 metres has a storage capacity of 1127.21 Ham with approximately 14 Square Kilometres as its Catchment Area got its Reservoir Full after the Taluka received seasonal total rains of 1850mm and about 157.20 mm of rainfall have pounded the taluka earlier night.
During the Commissioning year -2000 Chapoli Dam attained its full capacity in the first week of July month, while in the year 2017, Chapoli Dam failed to fill its Storage fully raising a few eyebrows.
Incidentally, on Tuesday, as the rains continued to lash the taluka, the Dam RL reached 38.88 Mtrs, as 166.40 mm of rains pounded the taluka taking a seasonal total to 2015.60 mm.
Chapoli Dam has the history of filling its reservoir as late as September end and overflowing in July month itself for the last three years, has in-fact got to its full capacity on 15th July, the earliest so far since its commissioning.
Last year Chapoli dam began to overflow early morning of 27th July, when 2410.60 mm of seasonal rains was received, while a year before it was on 19.07.2022 at 6.15 am when Taluka received seasonal rainfall of 2006.30 mm and two years ago, its spillage got active also at 5.30 am on 23.07.2021 after receipt of total seasonal rainfall of 2282.10mm.
Interestingly once the Dam overflows, the Chapoli rivulet which mostly remains dry for the few monsoon months gets active merging with the Devabhaga River and later the Palolem River ending into the Arabian Sea north of Palolem Beach.
