CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar has resigned from the post to make way for the next Councilors to occupy the august Chair, the third-one during the current term, so far.
Naikgaunkar submitted his resignation on Wednesday, as agreed amongst the seven ruling group councilors of Canacona Municipal Council.
Sara Shamba Naik Dessai is the next councilor tipped to occupy the coveted post of CMC Chairperson for the remaining period of the current term.
Soon after the municipal election in 2021, Seven of the newly elected Councillors came together in a virtual revolt against the than Canacona BJP MLA and GLA Dy. Speaker Isidore Fernandes and elected Ourem-Palolem Councilor Simon Rebello for the coveted post the Chairperson of CMC on 1st April. As agreed between these 7 ruling councilors of the 12-member Canacona Municipal Council, the post of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson would be rotated between three councilors (including Ramakant Naikgaunkar and Sara Naik Dessai) and the remain four Councilors, respectively.
On the completion of Rebello’s agreed tenure, Veteran and Chaudi Coucillor Ramakant Naikgaunkar became the 2nd Chairperson of the current term on 26th August’2022.
Naikgaunkar stating he has carried out 3.10 Crores worth of development works in his 21 months tenure, is giving the baton of CMC to Sara Naik Dessai as agreed, and she will complete the remaining months of this term. ‘No one will be able to break unity of our seven councilors in our commitment to successfully run the CMC and complete the term together’.
On the other hand, of the remaining all four first-time councilors from the rulling group, Councilors Amita Pagi and Laxuman (Bakal) Pagui has already served as the Vice-Chairperson of CMC, and Ponsulem councilor Narcisco (Nadin) Fernandes is the present occupant, while Rajbag-Tarir Councillor Gandesh Madgavkar is most likely to be appointed to the chair of Vice-Chairperson in the remaining term.
Interestingly. ever since Naikgaunkar became the Chairperson, not only the efforts to break the ruling group had miserably failed and fizzled out on many occasions, instead at least two councilors from the opposition panel had vouched their support to the ruling dispensation. And just a few days before the 7th May completed Lok Sabha elections, the entire opposition panel joined hands with the ruling panel and together worked for the success of BJP South-Goa candidate Pallavi Dempo, leaving no opposition in Canacona Municipal Council.
