PANAJI: Akshay Sawant,34, and Pallavi Ghadge,33, a couple from Mumbai, have been taken into custody by the Crime Branch on charges of scamming multiple Goan individuals, including jewellers, out of more than Rs 5.7 crore.
The duo is charged with deceiving investors by offering gold at reduced prices and making lucrative promises about the gold trade.
CB officials claim that the pair first won over investors by offering gold coins they had bought from the neighbourhood market for less than market value.
Sawant and Ghadge, however, sought full advance payments once the investors increased their investment, despite their assurances of returns in the form of gold or gains from the gold trade.
The police revealed that Sawant and Ghadge had deceived the complainants by not providing the promised profits or gold coins.
