PANAJI: Dean D’Gama, Executive Member of the Goa Basketball Association and Treasurer of Sonics Basketball Club, has become the first basketball statistician from Goa to earn a FIBA Statistics Licence.
D’Gama has played an active role in promoting basketball in the state through Sonics Basketball Club, supporting and helping organise several tournaments over the past four years. These include the Sonics All Goa Under 17 League, KJS Battle of the Ballers and the Women’s 3BL League. The tournaments have provided platforms for young and emerging players to gain competitive experience while also attracting players from outside Goa.
The FIBA Statistics Licence was awarded following a two day workshop conducted earlier in August. The programme was organised by the Basketball Federation of India with the approval of the FIBA Regional Office and featured learning modules through the FIBA Learning Centre, along with examinations.
Basketball statisticians play an important role in maintaining accurate match records and producing official game data. Their responsibilities include tracking points, rebounds, assists, fouls, turnovers and other key statistics in real time. The information is used for official box scores, player performance analysis, scouting, tactical planning and player development, while also providing reliable data for broadcasters, media and fans.
The Goa Basketball Association congratulated D’Gama on the achievement, highlighting his continued involvement in developing grassroots basketball through various competitions.
His FIBA qualification adds another dimension to his contribution to the sport and is expected to strengthen the availability of professional statistical expertise for basketball competitions in Goa.
