PANAJI: TY BAMC students of Don Bosco College Panjim organized a talk on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace in the Bicentry Hall. The session, led by Dr. Kim Rocha Couto, aimed to empower students to foster a safe and respectful environment within the college.
The event was organized under the guidance of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Committee, headed by Assistant Professor Vandana Patil and Assistant Professor Junsa Mudras.
Dr. Kim defined sexual harassment, explaining that it involves unwelcome advances and demands for sexual favors. She emphasized that sexual harassment degrades and demeans individuals, violates women’s rights, and contributes to gender discrimination. Dr. Kim highlighted that legal protections against sexual harassment were established in 2013, following the landmark Bhanwari Devi case which led to the creation of the Vishaka Guidelines.
She elaborated on various forms of sexual harassment, including inappropriate comments, displaying adult content, stalking, and any behavior that makes a person uncomfortable. Dr. Kim stressed that the impact of actions matters more than the intent, urging students to be mindful of their words and actions.
The session covered the scope of the law, which includes all workspaces, including the private sector, and extended to educational institutions such as colleges. Dr. Kim also presented a video based on a true incident of workplace harassment to test students’ understanding.
She informed students about their right to file complaints and the grievance redressal mechanisms available. Dr. Kim discussed the role of internal and local committees under the POSH Act and provided guidelines on filing a complaint, including the importance of documentation, evidence, and witnesses to build a strong case. She also outlined potential consequences for offenders, ranging from termination to community service, depending on the severity of the misconduct.
Confidentiality during inquiries was emphasized, with Dr. Kim noting that such cases are not subject to RTI disclosures. She also mentioned UGC regulations that offer similar protections for students on campus.
