New Delhi: India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer turned fatigue into a memorable performance, smashing his maiden T20I century as India defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the opening match of the five game series in Lucknow.
Iyer arrived in India after a demanding trip from Japan, where the team had won gold at the Asian Games. Despite the long journey and limited recovery time, India produced a dominant performance and showed no signs of being affected by the travel schedule.
Chasing a target of 172, India comfortably reached the required total in just 14.4 overs. Iyer led the charge with an unbeaten 102, completing his century in style and guiding India to a 1 0 lead in the series.
The captain admitted that the travel had left the players exhausted but said the team refused to use fatigue or jet lag as an excuse. Bowling first also helped India settle into the match before beginning the chase.
Iyer’s century was the standout moment of the evening and fulfilled a personal ambition for the right hander. He revealed that reaching his first T20I hundred had been on his mind and described the achievement as a dream come true.
The victory also reflected India’s strong overall approach. Having witnessed the excitement surrounding the recent India West Indies ODI contests, the team focused on maintaining its processes and executing its plans despite the challenging schedule.
With Iyer leading from the front, India made a commanding start to the series. The captain also expressed confidence that the team can develop into an even stronger T20 side if it continues to maintain the same discipline, preparation and commitment.
