CANACONA: Mycotoxins and painkillers taken to control various diseases also contribute to kidney damage resulting in renal failures’, Dr. Raghuram Bhat, Nephrologists of Victor Hospital, Margao.
Bhat was the keynote speaker at the Patrakar Din celebrations by Canacona Patrakar Sangh(CPS) organized ‘Awareness Talks on the alleged rampant Kidney ailments/Renal Failure cases in Canacona taluka. CPS celebrated Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s death anniversary as Journalist’s Day (Patrakar Din).
Stating that this problem is not confined to any one corner of Goa, Dr Bhat said kidney patients are also found in large numbers in various parts of the country and abroad. “in fact, there is at least one area of any particular region, Karwar in Karnataka or Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, and a particular area in Kerala, or Tamilnadu also have more of renal failure cases just like cases in Canacona region of Goa State.’ Dr Bhat said adding further that fast food and the consumption of various types of cold drinks in an uncontrollable manner are also damaging the Kidney.
Earlier, Ward Master at CHC Canacona and Florence Nightingale Awardee Prashant Kholkar gave very useful information about kidney disease in Canacona and guided how the residents can avoid falling prey to Renal Failures. ‘other than unreported at CHC/Government. “There are 187 listed Renal Failure patients in Canacona out of which 89 patients are availing dialysis at the CHC hospital. In July alone, CHC conducted 967 dialysis with the government borning all its expenses. I suggest each resident/person in Canacona make it a practice that prior to their every birthday, conduct tests such as albonium, Blood Urea, Serum Creatinine, Ultrasound, and Albonium as early detection can help to avoid kidney ailments,” he said.
Controlling blood sugar and BP, and avoiding fatty and unhealthy food can also add to avoiding renal ailments, he added.

Doctors from Canacona Dr Dhillon Desai, Dr Mariano Correia, Dr Sadanand Prabhu, Dr Aman Prabhugaonkar and Dr. Anand Sawant, besides Dr. Raghuram Bhat, Dr Devika Lawande, were felicitated at the hands of CMC Chairperson Sara Desai, Deputy Collector Madhu Narvekar, Mamlatdar Manoj Korgaonkar respectively presenting them with shawls, Shrifal, memento and a Certificates of Honour.
CMC Chairperson Sara Naik Desai, and Canacona Mamlatdar Manoj Korgaonkar, addressed the audience consisting of 12th Science students and some members of the public.
At the beginning, a portrait of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak is garlanded at the hands of all the guests on the dais.
Responding to the felicitation Dr. Aman Prabhugaonkar said that Canacona journalists are very conscious and due to their awareness, many problems in Canacona are highlighted and resolved. ‘I too had agitated for the shortcomings in Canacona, but over the years Canacona is a leading taluka in terms of education, and Canaocna has given people like me love, respect and also money. We will always remain indebted to the people of Canacona’, Dr Aman Prabhugaonkar said.
Felicities Dr. Dhillon Desai and Dr. Devika Lawande also replied to their felicitation. The program was moderated by Harischandra Kholkar, Felicitees were introduced by Sanjay Komarpant, and Subhash Mahale proposed a vote of thanks.
