Lucknow: India are expected to make changes to their playing XI for the opening T20I against the West Indies in Lucknow on Wednesday, with bowling coach Morne Morkel hinting that head coach Gautam Gambhir could rotate players.
India enter the five match series after successfully defending their Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal. Shreyas Iyer and his team defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the final to claim the title.
With India’s T20I side having been in regular action since June, workload management is now expected to play an important role in team selection. Morkel indicated that Gambhir could use the series to test different combinations while giving some players a break.
“I’m pretty sure Gautam will look to rotate,” Morkel said, while stressing that the final decision on the playing XI rests with the selectors, coach and captain.
The focus, he added, remains on identifying the strongest combinations for India’s next World Cup campaign. The series against the West Indies could therefore provide opportunities for players who have had limited game time.
Among those attracting attention is young batter Vaibhav, who has been part of the national setup. Morkel believes continued exposure to experienced international players will be crucial for his development.
The bowling coach said that even when Vaibhav does not make the playing XI, spending time around senior players can help him understand preparation, match awareness and the processes involved in building an innings.
For India, the five match series presents an opportunity to balance immediate results with long term planning. With a busy T20 calendar and the next World Cup in mind, the team management is likely to use the matches to assess players and combinations while carefully managing workloads.
The first T20I in Lucknow could therefore see India experiment with their combination as they begin their latest series against the West Indies.
