PANAJI: In a shocking incident a user of WhatsApp impersonated Goa Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel by using his name and photo on the platform and contacting several people in need of financial assistance.
The unidentified man then allegedly persuaded his victims to deposit money into a designated bank account, according to the police.
In accordance with IT Act sections 66-C, the Cyber Police have submitted a First Information Report submission.
Cyber investigators apprehended Utpal Debarma and Parbir Jamatia from rural Bangalore in a case akin to this one in 2021.
One of Goel’s friends in this instance had even transferred Rs 98,000 into the fraudulent account before realizing it had been sent to an impostor.
The suspects were located in their hometown and transported to Goa in order to face justice.
