PORVORIM: Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar today said that the state government earned a profit of Rs 925 crore on power sales in the last 4 years.
“Goa government purchased power w/Rs 8016 cr from 2020 till Mar 2024; earned Rs 8941cr from the sale of power; govt made Rs 925 cr profit on power sale in 4 yrs,” said Min Sudin.
He further said that Infrastructure development like underground cabling, old transformer replacement, strengthening of the distribution network, new EHV substations, upgradation of existing EHV substations etc. are undertaken vigorously for providing quality and reliable power to the consumers of the state of Goa.
Minister said that the first step taken to recover the arrears is the issuance of a 15days notice after which the said installation is placed under Temporary disconnection.
“In case the amount remains unpaid the installation is permanently disconnected after due procedure and even after that if the amount remains unpaid the matter is referred to Revenue Recovery Court for recovery of the amount under land Revenue Code,” he added.
The opposition claimed that since the Electricity Department generated over Rs 261 crore in profits in the previous fiscal year, there was no justification for the government to raise the State’s power tariff.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai stated that the sale of electricity to different customer categories during the 2023–24 fiscal year brought in over Rs 261 crore in profit for the Electricity Department, which had earned Rs 2,772 crore and expended Rs 2,522 crore.
He claimed that even though Margao MLA Digambar Kamat had submitted a starred question about an increase in power tariffs, the House had adjourned twice, making it impossible to discuss the matter during Question Hour.
