PANAJI: Goa recorded 1,005 motor vehicle accidents between January 1 and September 30, 2026, compared with 915 during the corresponding period last year, marking a 9.8% increase in road accidents.
According to the comparative data on motor vehicle accidents and fatalities, 92 fatal accidents were reported in both periods. However, fatalities declined from 96 in 2025 to 91 in 2026, registering a 5.2% reduction.
At the same time, grievous injuries saw a sharp rise, increasing from 130 cases in 2025 to 173 cases in 2026, an increase of 33.07%.
Ponda Records Highest Number Of Accidents
The data shows that TC Ponda recorded the highest number of accidents at 159, followed by TC Margao with 100 cases, MTPS with 89 cases, MCPS with 96 cases, and Cuncolim with 96 cases.
Self-fatal accidents also declined during the period. Such accidents accounted for 28 fatalities in 2026, compared with 36 during the corresponding period in 2025. Their share of total fatalities dropped from 39.1% to 30.1%.
Traffic Enforcement Intensifies
A separate enforcement report for September 2026 indicates increased action against several traffic violations. Cases involving drunk driving, riding without helmets, modified silencers, insurance violations and other offences recorded notable increases compared with September 2025.
However, enforcement cases related to no-entry violations, no-parking, obstructive parking, unauthorised parking, mobile phone use while driving and improper number plates declined compared with the previous year.
The figures indicate that while Goa has witnessed an increase in road accidents, fatalities have declined, even as the sharp rise in grievous injuries remains a significant road-safety concern.
