PORVORIM: Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar today urged the government to consider a third district for Goa incorporating all the tribal dominated talukas.
Tawadkar was addressing the media before attending the Goa Assembly session today.
“There is a demand for third district in the state. We also wanted that Canacona, Quepem, Sanguem upto Dharbandora should be made a different district. It is a tribal belt,” said Tawadkar.
He further said that it will help development of the area and Quepem should be a central point for the the taluka.
A third administrative district with its center in Quepem taluka needs to be established, according to Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral, during a debate in the assembly regarding the requests for funding for the Revenue Department.
The proposal seeks to address the long-standing problem of residents in these areas not being able to access government services. It would also cover the talukas of Sanguem, Canacona, and Dharbandora.
According to Cabral, residents have difficulties because they have to travel a considerable distance to the South Goa Collectorate office in Margao in order to receive basic government services. This is especially true for the ST population, which is heavily represented in Quepem Taluka.
In addition to being inconvenient, this puts an excessive financial strain on them, according to Cabral.
“We can make government services more accessible to the public by establishing a dedicated administrative center in Quepem. This will enhance overall service delivery efficiency, cut down on travel expenses, and save time,” he said.
The MLA for Curchorem added that there is land in Quepem available for the establishment of a district office.
To make this vision a reality, he continued, “we now need the Chief Minister’s attention and support.”
Speaking further Speaker Tawadkar confirmed that minister Mauvin Godinho had filed a complaint with him regarding an unknown person’s threat to kill via audio, and he stated that the privilege committee will address the issue as soon as the accused is identified.
Reporters were informed by Tawadkar that Mauvin Godinho, the minister, had filed a complaint and requested that it be forwarded to the privilege committee.
