New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor, with a total investment of ₹1,86,405 crore aimed at strengthening intra state power transmission networks and integrating large amounts of renewable energy into the national grid. The scheme is targeted for completion by 2032 to 33.
The Green Energy Corridor Phase III will strengthen the Intra State Transmission System across states and Union Territories, enabling the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy. The project is designed to support the expansion of solar, wind and other renewable power generation by improving the infrastructure needed to transmit electricity from generation centres to consumers.
A major component of the initiative is the deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems. These storage facilities are expected to improve grid flexibility by helping manage fluctuations in renewable generation, transmission congestion and peak hour curtailment. They will also help meet electricity demand during periods when solar power is unavailable.
Of the total allocation, ₹1,36,378 crore has been earmarked for intra state transmission infrastructure, while ₹50,000 crore will support the 50 GWh battery storage component. The scheme also carries Central Financial Support of ₹54,082 crore, which is intended to reduce intra state transmission charges and help contain power costs.
Greenfield transmission projects will be developed through tariff based competitive bidding, while brownfield upgrades and network strengthening will follow a cost plus model. State Transmission Utilities will oversee implementation, with transmission service providers undertaking competitively bid projects.
The government expects the programme to strengthen long term energy security, support the expansion of non fossil fuel capacity and create employment across transmission, manufacturing, construction and energy storage sectors. The initiative is also intended to improve grid management as India expands renewable power generation.
