Goa State Pollution Control Board has directed the Directorate of Transport to monitor the transportation of ore from Mormugao Port Trust.
The Board letter comes following a complaint by activist Damodar Divkar regarding dust pollution in the Vasco city.
“The Board as in receipt of the complaint regarding dust pollution caused due to transportation of Bauxite Ore for overloading of any truck and ensure that all the trucks are covered with tarpaulin during the transportation,” the letter by by GSPCB Member Secretary Sheila Monteiro said.
Meanwhile, the virtual personal hearing of MPT with regards to complaint regarding Dust pollution caused due to Bauxite Transportation was held on June 11, 2021.
Complainant Damodar Divkar, who was present for personal hearing on virtual mode, said that there is dust evident in the Vasco city due to handling of bauxite at MPT port at berth no 10/11 and the transportation of same through Vasco city.
Further, he didn’t agree to the findings of AAQM reports of the GSPCB.
He also submitted that he has never seen the road sweeping machine in Vasco city in operation and submitted that MPT is not adhering to any of the consent conditions in the consent issued by the board.
The complainant alleged that there is increase in the patients (COVID-19) due to dust pollution in Vasco city.
He requested that Board should penalise MPT for the violations of the consent conditions and also stop handling of bauxite by MPT at berth no.10 and 11.
In reply, Sudin Prabhudesai (Engineer) represented MPT submitted that they are carrying out measures such as dust sweeping and water sprinkling on the road.
He further submitted that the trucks are covered during transportation and submitted that they have submitted compliance letter as reply with details of the measures taken by them to control the dust pollution and the same may be taken on record.
He further informed that they are complying with the consent conditions
