PANAJI: Goa Forward Party (GFP) chief Vijai Sardesai has termed the High Court’s interim stay on the issuance of a notification estimating Goa’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) population a setback to the long-pending demand for political reservation for the community.
In a statement, Sardesai said Goa’s original inhabitants, whom he referred to as Mull Goemkars, had once again been let down, alleging a contradiction between the government’s public assurances supporting reservation and the legal developments surrounding the notification.
Questioning the BJP government’s position, Sardesai said statements made by the Chief Minister and BJP ministers in support of political reservation had lost credibility in light of the court proceedings and the interim stay.
He said the ST community deserved clarity, accountability and concrete action rather than political assurances, adding that the demand for political representation should not be reduced to another unfulfilled promise.
Sardesai maintained that the future of Goa’s original inhabitants should not be held hostage to political considerations and called upon the ST community to unite and pursue its constitutional rights through a determined and democratic movement.
“Political reservation is not a favour. It is a question of justice, representation and dignity,” Sardesai said, urging the community to organise collectively to advance its long-pending demand.
