New Delhi: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the political situation in West Bengal has become increasingly tense following the recent election, claiming that the atmosphere has become so difficult that she can no longer freely step out of her home.
Speaking during the INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi, Banerjee accused the BJP of creating what she described as an atmosphere of “anarchy” and “autocracy” after its electoral victory. She also raised concerns over protests and attacks involving Trinamool leaders in different parts of the state.
Several Trinamool leaders have recently faced demonstrations, with some incidents involving eggs and stones being thrown at their vehicles. The Trinamool has alleged that BJP supporters were behind the incidents, while the BJP has described them as expressions of public anger against the ruling party in Bengal.
One of the recent incidents involved Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh, whose vehicle was reportedly stopped by a group in Hooghly. Eggs and stones were thrown at the vehicle during the confrontation.
Banerjee also stepped up her criticism of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during the INDIA bloc meeting. She used the term “Vanish Kumar” while attacking the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal.
She described the SIR exercise as flawed and called for action against the Chief Election Commissioner. The issue was among the main subjects discussed by more than 20 Opposition parties during their meeting in the national capital.
The INDIA bloc has been demanding greater scrutiny of the electoral roll revision process and has raised concerns over reported differences within the Election Commission regarding decisions linked to SIR. The poll panel has maintained that internal discussions and differences are part of its institutional process and that decisions are taken through established procedures.
Opposition leaders have also called for stronger safeguards for voters, including an effective appeal mechanism before names are removed from electoral rolls, greater transparency in revisions and protection against exclusion caused by administrative errors.
