PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today said that the state government is in the process of identifying new land to set up a permanent campus of IIT Goa.
“IIT campus will come up in Goa; Government is in the process of identifying new land to set up a permanent campus of IIT Goa,’ said CM Sawant.
He further said that this government is for the people and we all should get united and work for the IIT,” Sawant said, adding that only locals from the area will get opportunities in non-teaching jobs.
Sources said that Sanguem taluka itself may be completely out of the race to host the campus. Last month, the Union ministry informed Goa that the land identified land in Sanguem is not suitable for the IIT and that it decided not to send a site selection committee to inspect the property.
Ever since an IIT was allotted to Goa by the Centre in 2014, the institute started functioning in a temporary campus housed at the Goa Engineering College (GEC) campus located in Ponda.
In 2020, the BJP-led coalition government had zeroed in on Melaulim in North Goa as the site for the campus after two other potential locations in Sanguem and Canacona were shot down following protests, who alleged land scams.
In January last year, the Goa government was forced to scrap the IIT campus at Melaulim after protests by local villagers turned violent.
