PANAJI: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has become the latest member of the Goa Cabinet after being administered the oath of office by Governor P Ashok Gajapathi Raju at a ceremony held in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Amonkar’s appointment comes after the ministerial berth fell vacant following the death of senior BJP leader and Ponda MLA Ravi Naik.
Reacting to his elevation, Amonkar said that although the opportunity to join the Cabinet had come late, he was happy to take up the responsibility.
“Even though I got the ministry late, I am happy,” he said, while expressing gratitude to the people, his supporters, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the party leadership for their support.
Amonkar’s political journey to the Cabinet has seen a shift in party affiliation. He was elected from Mormugao in the 2022 Assembly elections as a Congress candidate, defeating sitting BJP MLA Milind Naik.
Later that year, he joined the BJP along with seven other Congress legislators during the political merger that strengthened the ruling party’s position in the Assembly.
Before his induction into the Cabinet, Amonkar had also served as chairman of the Goa Sewage and Infrastructural Development Corporation.
With his swearing-in, the ministerial vacancy created by Ravi Naik’s passing has been filled, and Amonkar now takes on a new responsibility in the state government.
