PANAJI: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Unit, today in its weather forecast, has issued an orange alert with heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 11 and 12.
“With the likely formation of a low-pressure area off north Andhra Pradesh- south Odisha coasts around 11th July, rainfall activity over Goa is very likely to increase from around 10th July; Orange colour warning issued for July 11-12,” IMD said its forecast
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the strengthening of the Southwest monsoon over the Arabian Sea will lead to enhanced rainfall activity across the western coastal regions from July 9.
Accordingly, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy showers have been forecast over Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe from Friday onwards.
However, after a few intense rain spells, the monsoon took a break which, according to experts, has lasted longer than what is typically expected. This has been a cause for worry from an agricultural point of view, considering July is the prime time of sowing and most Kharif crops have to be sown by July 15-20.
But now, the break is nearing its end. Moreover, top IMD officials have stated that the monsoon showers will pick up across the country in the second week of July and return to normalcy by the third.
