New Delhi: India has initiated efforts to join a sixth generation fighter aircraft development programme as it looks to strengthen its future air power.
The Defence Ministry has told a parliamentary panel that efforts are underway to participate in the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), led by France. The initiative comes as major military powers accelerate the development of next generation combat aircraft.
A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has urged the government to prepare a clear roadmap for the development and acquisition of sixth generation fighters to ensure India does not fall behind in advanced air warfare capabilities.
Two major international programmes are currently under development. One involves the UK, Italy and Japan, while the other is being pursued by France and Germany.
India is considering joining one of these programmes to gain access to advanced technologies and contribute to future fighter development.
At the same time, work on India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme is progressing, with its design already developed.
The government has been asked to provide a detailed status report and tentative timeline for both the sixth generation fighter initiative and the AMCA programme.
