New Delhi: India’s injury concerns have intensified, with as many as 13 players from the current national setup or the wider selection pool reportedly undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
The growing list of fitness issues has already affected India’s preparations, with Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy unavailable for the ongoing tour. Questions also remain over the fitness of Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan.
Bumrah’s recovery is being closely monitored after he arrived at the Centre of Excellence with inflammation in his left knee. During rehabilitation, the fast bowler reportedly experienced discomfort while jogging and performing single leg exercises. As a result, there is currently no definite timeline for his return to competitive cricket.
Hardik Pandya has also faced a setback while recovering from a left quadriceps injury. After returning to high intensity bowling, the all rounder developed discomfort in his right calf. Although examinations did not reveal significant damage, he was temporarily advised to stop running and bowling to prevent the issue from worsening.
Pandya has since responded positively to treatment and resumed running. His bowling workload is expected to be increased gradually as he continues his recovery.
India’s latest concern involves Test captain Shubman Gill, who missed the opening day of the warm up match against Sri Lanka XI in Colombo after suffering an impact injury to his right ring finger during training.
The injury occurred during Thursday’s practice session, prompting the team management to keep Gill out as a precaution. KL Rahul took over the captaincy for the opening day of the practice game.
The Indian team’s medical staff is monitoring Gill’s condition, with further assessment expected to determine his availability.
With several key players recovering from injuries and others facing ongoing fitness checks, India’s medical team faces an important task in managing workloads and ensuring players return without risking further setbacks.
