MARGAO: Former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court Justice Ferdino Rebello said the ‘Enough is Enough’ movement is considering approaching the judiciary seeking a halt to construction of multi-dwelling units in Goa until adequate drinking water supply is ensured.
Rebello was speaking to Goan youth at a meeting held at Grace Church Hall, Margao, as part of the movement’s efforts to involve young people in its campaign on issues concerning Goa’s development and governance. The meeting was scheduled as a ‘Youth Connect’ programme on October 2.
Rebello said residents in some parts of Goa, including Dona Paula, face limited daily water supply while development permissions continue to be granted. He said the movement was considering legal intervention to seek a pause on multi-dwelling construction until the water situation improves.
He said the movement would have no objection to permissions for single-dwelling ground-plus-one houses, while calling for a halt on multi-dwelling units until adequate water supply is available.
Rebello also spoke about the movement’s 10-point charter of demands, including its proposal for legislation to protect Goa’s agricultural land. The movement has previously advocated for a comprehensive agricultural land protection bill and has sought legislative action on the issue.
Addressing the gathering, Rebello stressed the role of young people in public affairs and urged them to participate in efforts concerning Goa’s future. He also referred to concerns among young people regarding political developments in the State, including elected representatives changing political affiliations.
He said approaching the courts would be one component of the movement, while creating public awareness about citizens’ rights and pursuing legislation on agricultural land protection would form other parts of its campaign.
The ‘Enough is Enough’ movement has been conducting public meetings across Goa and has focused on issues including land conversion, development permissions and protection of agricultural land.
