NEW DELHI: Dy Chief Minister Babu Kavlekar, who has been fighting for ST status to Dhangar samaj has expressed satisfaction over the Centre’s assurance on the issue and thanked the Central government for the positive response.
Dr Pramod Sawant led Goa’s Dhangar community delegation and Dy CM Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar and met Home Minister Amit Shah. “The meeting was a successful one”, termed Dy CM Kavlekar. The positive stand taken by Home Minister Amit Shah will smoothen the future process of getting Dhangar community of Goa, it’s much deserving ST status,” said Dy CM Kavlekar.
CM Dr Pramod Sawant led the delegation, with Dy CM Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar, Social Welfare Minister Milind Naik, Chief Secretary Parimal Rai, RGI Vivek Joshi and Advisor-Consultant on this matter N D Agarwal.
The inclusion of the Dhangar Community in ST has been a long-standing demand of the community. Kavlekar himself has been leading this demand for over 25 years now under the banner of GAKUVEDH. Gawda, Kunbi and Velip out this have been already given the ST status, and the Dhangar community has been awaiting its inclusion under this category.
“This meeting was crucial as RGI, which falls under the home ministry, had on four occasions raised queries on the proposal. Home minister Shah, invited RGI Vivek Joshi and gave him directions to clear the future process, itself was like battle half won for all of us who attended this meeting”, said Kavlekar.
After this meeting, Kavlekar and the delegation met RGI Joshi at his office to chalk out the future course of action.
Earlier in the day, the delegation led by CM Dr Pramod Sawant had met Tribal Minister Arjun Munda regarding the same process. After RGI’s clearance, the matter will be processed in the Tribal Ministry.
The delegation included Dy CM Babu Kavlekar, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar, Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar, Social Welfare minister Milind Naik, Minister for PWD Deepak Prabhu Pawaskar, Advisor-Consultant N D Agarwal, Dr. Janu Zore, Dr. Shantaram Surme, Dr. Rajan Lambor and Shri. B D Mote. “The minister welcomed the proposal and has extended complete support to this inclusion”, said Dy CM Kavlekar. “as a President of Dhangar community in Goa, I thank Dr Pramod Sawant for this initiative”, said Kavlekar at the end.
