CANACONA: Loliem Tigers emerged victorious in a closely fought contest, defeating Young Maratha to lift the inaugural Chetan Manju Desai Leatherball T20 Cricket Tournament trophy at the GCA Cricket Ground in Mashem.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Loliem Tigers posted a modest total of 103 runs, getting bowled out on the final delivery of their 20 overs. Despite the low score, the team displayed resilience and determination in defending their total under floodlights.
Young Maratha began their chase with intent but faced consistent pressure from the Tigers’ bowling unit. The innings saw moments of promise, yet wickets at regular intervals prevented them from building momentum. They eventually finished at 94 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs, falling short by 9 runs in a gripping finale.
Saiesh Naik Gaonkar stood out for Young Maratha with a steady 26 runs off 23 balls, including two sixes and two boundaries. For Loliem Tigers, Yash Prabhugaonkar contributed a quick 25 off 16 deliveries, striking one six and four boundaries. Vinesh Satarkar, who was named Player of the Final, added a valuable 20 runs, playing a crucial role in setting up the defendable total.
On the bowling front, Manish Naik Gaonkar impressed with three key wickets for Young Maratha, keeping the Tigers in check during their innings. However, Loliem Tigers’ bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, with Raj Badekar and Animesh Prabhu claiming two wickets each to maintain control throughout the chase.
The victory secured Loliem Tigers the championship trophy along with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh. The final match was attended by prominent guests, marking a memorable conclusion to the tournament’s first edition.
