GOA: Manipal Hospital Goa proudly announces a groundbreaking achievement in cardiac care with the successful completion of the first ever valve-in-valve TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) procedure in the Konkan region. This procedure, termed TAVR in SAVR (inserting a new valve non- surgically in a previously surgically replaced degenerated Valve) was performed by Dr. Nikhil Sontakke, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Manipal Hospital Goa, on a 69-year-old female patient, marking a significant advancement in cardiac interventions.
The patient, who had previously undergone surgical Aortic and Mitral valve replacements, faced recurrent heart failure symptoms due to the degeneration of her replaced Aortic valve. Due to the risk associated with a third re-do surgery, the patient opted for the innovative TAVR procedure, avoiding the need for invasive surgery.
Mr. Surendra Prasad, Hospital Director & Unit Head, of Manipal Hospitals Goa said, “The successful completion of the TAVR procedure marks a significant milestone in cardiac care, showcasing our commitment to innovation and excellence. This groundbreaking achievement not only reflects our dedication to patient-centered care but also positions Manipal Hospital Goa as a leading center for advanced cardiac interventions in the region. We are proud to offer cutting-edge treatments that transform lives and improve outcomes for patients facing complex cardiac conditions.”
The procedure was conducted under the expertise and guidance of Manipal Hospital Goa’s “Heart Team” led by Dr. Nikhil Sontakke, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, and with the collaborative efforts of Dr. Divya Mahaldar, Consultant Cardiac Anaesthesiologist, Dr. Rakesh Deshmane, Consultant CVTS Surgeon, Dr. Noel Henriques, Consultant Non-Invasive Cardiologist, and the entire “Heart Team”, including technicians and nurses.
Dr. Nikhil Sontakke, said, “The successful TAVR procedure represents a paradigm shift in the management of valvar heart disease, offering patients a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery. This landmark achievement underscores our team’s expertise and dedication to providing innovative solutions for our patients. We are thrilled to have pioneered this groundbreaking procedure in the Konkan region, setting a new standard for cardiac care.”
The successful completion of the TAVR in the SAVR procedure establishes Manipal Hospital Goa as a pioneering center for advanced cardiac care in the Konkan region.
Dr. Rakesh Deshmane, expressing his enthusiasm about the milestone, stated, “This procedure has paved the way for all needy patients who can now avail of the novel procedure in Manipal Hospital Goa and will not be required to travel out of Goa for this complex procedure.”
The patient, who underwent the TAVR procedure was discharged within a period of four days, in stable condition, experiencing complete recovery from symptoms of heart failure.
This significant advancement in cardiac interventions underscores Manipal Hospital Goa’s commitment to delivering innovative and life-saving treatments to patients in this region.
