New Delhi: Meta Platforms has announced a major global restructuring exercise that will see around 8,000 employees lose their jobs as the company accelerates its transition towards artificial intelligence focused operations.
The restructuring process reportedly began from Singapore, with affected employees receiving termination emails in the early hours of the morning. Alongside the layoffs, Meta is expected to reassign nearly 7,000 employees to newly created AI focused workflow and automation roles as part of Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s broader push to integrate AI across the company.
Meta is also planning to leave nearly 6,000 vacant positions unfilled in an effort to streamline operations and reduce costs. Combined with the layoffs and restructuring, the company’s workforce reduction is expected to affect nearly 14,000 positions overall.
The latest cuts come amid a wider wave of AI driven restructuring across the global technology industry. According to layoff tracking platform Layoffs.fyi, more than 110,000 employees have already lost jobs across 144 tech companies in 2026.
Several major firms have announced similar measures this year as companies increasingly prioritise automation and artificial intelligence investments. Amazon is reportedly planning to cut around 16,000 jobs, while Oracle is said to be reducing nearly 30,000 roles globally. Fintech company Block also reduced a significant portion of its workforce earlier this year citing operational changes linked to AI adoption. LinkedIn has likewise announced fresh layoffs in recent weeks.
Zuckerberg has increasingly positioned artificial intelligence at the centre of Meta’s long term strategy as the company competes with rivals including Google and OpenAI.
Reports suggest Meta has encouraged engineers to depend more heavily on AI tools for coding and routine tasks. The company is also reportedly experimenting with AI systems to assist with executive functions such as gathering employee feedback and internal workflow management.
The rapid shift towards AI centric operations has reportedly triggered growing anxiety among employees. More than 1,000 workers are said to have signed a petition opposing the use of employee device data for AI training, including monitoring of keystrokes, screen activity and mouse movements. Employees have also expressed concerns over declining morale and fears of additional layoffs as Meta deepens its AI transformation efforts.
