NEW DELHI: In a major pre-election announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has declared 35% reservation for women in all state government jobs and services. The decision, seen as a significant step toward gender inclusivity and empowerment, comes just months before the state is scheduled to go to polls in October-November.
The announcement was made following a Cabinet meeting, where the proposal received unanimous approval. The reservation will apply to all direct recruitment processes in the state’s government departments and will benefit women who are original residents of Bihar.
“This decision will open up greater opportunities for women and is in line with our ongoing commitment to promote gender equality and inclusive governance,” Kumar stated.
Alongside the quota decision, the Cabinet also approved the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission, a body that will advise the state on policies related to youth education, employment, and empowerment.
Taking to social media platform X, Nitish Kumar said, “I am pleased to inform that with the aim of providing more and more employment opportunities to the youth of Bihar, training them, and making them empowered and capable, the state government has decided to form the Bihar Youth Commission.”
The commission will include one chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, and seven members, all below the age of 45. It will also focus on ensuring that local youth are prioritized in private sector jobs within Bihar while safeguarding the interests of those studying or working outside the state.
This announcement follows another welfare initiative made last month, where the Bihar government increased the social security pension from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per month. The enhanced pension amount will be credited directly into beneficiaries’ accounts starting July 10.
“The elderly are a precious part of our society. Ensuring their dignity and well-being is a top priority for the government. We will continue our efforts in this direction,” the Chief Minister said.
With 243 Assembly seats in Bihar up for grabs later this year, these announcements are being viewed as strategic welfare moves by the ruling government. By targeting two major voter groups—women and the youth—the state administration appears to be reinforcing its focus on social justice, employment, and empowerment.
As the election season approaches, more policy initiatives are expected, with Nitish Kumar seeking to consolidate his government’s image as a pro-people administration committed to inclusive development.
