Panaji: In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the North Goa Police have successfully dismantled three major online scam networks that were deceiving tourists in the region.
The first case involves a water sports scam where individuals were fraudulently selling tickets for water sports activities in Goa. Multiple complaints were received through the 1930 cybercrime portal and via email, with victims reporting that either the operators did not exist or the services provided were vastly different from what was advertised. Following a thorough investigation, FIRs were registered at the Panaji Police Station (FIR No. 21/2025, dated 10.02.2025) and Porvorim Police Station (FIR No. 13/2025, dated 11.02.2025). The police apprehended Mayank Jain, Harish Jain, and Shashank Verma, all residents of Delhi.
In another instance, a tourist was scammed after booking a homestay in Goa through a Facebook group dedicated to homestays and hotels. The complainant made an advance payment to Dilip Kumar Vishwakarma, who subsequently blocked all further communication. An FIR was registered at the Calangute Police Station (FIR No. 31/2025, dated 12.02.2025). Using technical intelligence, the police traced and arrested Vishwakarma in Bidar, Karnataka.
A third case involved the fraudulent sale of sex toys from an e-commerce website that falsely claimed a local presence in Goa. Despite receiving payment, the company failed to deliver the products, and the listed business address was found to be non-existent. An FIR was registered at the Panjim Police Station (FIR No. 12/2025, dated 20.01.2025). The investigation revealed multiple complaints from across the country and led to the arrest of Shubendhu Kumar Das, a resident of Kolkata, West Bengal.
These arrests underscore the North Goa Police’s commitment to safeguarding tourists and residents from cyber fraud and online scams. The police have been proactive in tracking down and apprehending individuals who exploit tourists’ trust and financial transactions.
