PORVORIM: The State Cabinet today granted further six-month extension to off shore casinos to operate in River Mandovi till March 31,2021.
The last six month extension granted will lapse on September 30.
The government had taken a policy decision in 2013 to relocate the offshore casinos from River Mandovi. However, the failure to identify an alternative site forced the government to grant them a series of extensions to continue in the river.
The operations of offshore casinos are currently shut in the State in view of COVID-19 imposed lockdown.
Since August 2014, government has been granting extensions to the off-shore casinos to shift to alternative site.
Government had earlier identified alternative site at Aguada Bay, Zuari, Chapora and River Sal for shifting of these casinos. However, owing to the opposition from the locals, the plan was halted. Since then, government has not been able to identify any alternate location.
