New Delhi:
In a major blow to India’s cricket team, batting superstar Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the first One-Day International (ODI) against England due to a knee injury. This development not only affects India’s lineup but also raises concerns about the team’s preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
Kohli’s absence marks the first time since July 2022 that he has missed an ODI due to an injury. To fill the gap, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana have been brought into the playing XI, both making their ODI debuts. This move is part of India’s strategy to assess new talent and bolster their batting and bowling options.
Virat Kohli’s injury, which caused soreness in his right knee, was evident as he warmed up with a heavily strapped knee before the match. Despite his efforts, he was ultimately ruled out, a decision confirmed by India captain Rohit Sharma during the toss.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who replaces Kohli, is set to make his ODI debut, bringing fresh energy to the Indian batting lineup. Alongside Jaiswal, Harshit Rana, a right-arm fast bowler, will also make his debut, adding depth to India’s bowling attack.
India is also grappling with the fitness issues of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of action due to back spasms since the final Test of the Australia tour last month. Bumrah’s participation in the third ODI against England will depend on the results of a pending scan.
In another significant change, KL Rahul has been preferred over Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper-batter for the series opener. Legspinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who was recently added to the squad, may see action as the series progresses.
Mohammed Shami, who has recently returned from a long injury layoff, is playing his first ODI since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. This marks a crucial comeback for Shami as India looks to strengthen its bowling arsenal.
The match, which is being played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, saw England captain Jos Buttler win the toss and opt to bat first. The series will continue with the second ODI in Cuttack and the third in Ahmedabad.
