The Minister for Transport Mauvin Godinho today justified State’s decision to hike VAT on petrol and diesel stating that the money is needed for infrastructure development and social schemes.
Godinho also said that unless road infrastructure is improved, State will not go ahead with the implementation of the new Motor Vehicle Act.
“This is a pandemic times. Government need money from somewhere. I agree that it is not the right time to hike prices but govt need money to spend on infrastructures and implement its social schemes,” the Minister said.
“Money generated will not be used for fun,” he added assuring that the prices will be reduced once the economic situation normalises.
He also said that in the coming financial year state’s GST collection will also improve.
