New Delhi: Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career spanning more than two decades with the national team.
The 234 time Portugal international confirmed his decision in an emotional video shared on Instagram on Thursday. Ronaldo finishes his international career with 146 goals, making him one of the most prolific goalscorers in the history of the game.
Addressing Portuguese supporters, the 40 year old said the time had come to hand over the iconic number seven shirt to the next generation. He reflected on the responsibility and privilege of representing his country for 23 years, describing the journey as one that changed his life forever.
Ronaldo admitted that the decision was not easy, explaining that it was guided by both his mind and his heart. His international journey began in August 2003 and included several historic achievements for Portugal.
The defining moment came in 2016, when he captained Portugal to their first ever European Championship title in France. Although an injury forced him to leave the field during the final against France, Ronaldo remained an influential presence as his teammates secured a historic victory.
His international career also featured a recent controversy involving national team coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo reportedly left the team camp following a disagreement over his omission from a Nations League match in October and subsequently received a 30 day suspension. The incident had raised questions about his future with the national side.
Despite speculation about a possible return, Ronaldo has now confirmed that his international chapter is over.
He also featured at this year’s FIFA World Cup, scoring three goals as Portugal reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual champions Spain.
With 146 goals, 234 appearances and a European Championship trophy to his name, Ronaldo leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in Portuguese football.
