Within 48 hours of the wall of the Portuguese-era Maloli bridge between Valpoi and Nanoda collapsed, the Valpoi Public Works Department has taken up the task of repairing the bridge.
The villagers in the area have welcomed the quick action by the PWD.
On Wednesday, one sidewall of the Portuguese era bridge at Maloli between Valpoi and Nanoda had collapsed.
The wall collapse had made the bridge dangerous for commuting.
This Portuguese bridge is very critical for Maloli village as well as five other villages. The wall collapse posed a danger of all six villages being cut off from Valpoi town.
\Devendra Velingkar, Assistant Engineer, Valpoi Public Works Department, inspected the work and started repairs on Friday.
Repair work has been underway since Friday morning. Meanwhile, when contacted, Devendra Velingkar said that the bridge is being repaired immediately so that the citizens of the adjoining villages do not face any problems in the future.
He said the bridge has been constructed using laterite stone and is very old.
“The bridge is being repaired with reinforced concrete. The work would be completed in a week,” he said.
He said that when completed, the bridge will be safe for traffic movement.
He said that after the monsoon, a proposal for a new bridge will be submitted, and with the help of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, the project could be initiated immediately.
Meanwhile, the work was inspected this morning by Nagargaon Panchayat Sarpanch Prashant Marathe.
Reacting to this, Sarpanch Prashant Marathe said that the repair work of this bridge had been undertaken, keeping in view the severe problems of the villagers in the villages.
He applauded Public Works Department for quick action.
