Ranchi: Indian wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson has addressed the criticism surrounding his recent performances, emphasising personal responsibility and the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket after producing a fighting half century in the T20I against the West Indies in Ranchi.
Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, had endured four consecutive low scores across recent appearances, including the one off T20I against Japan, the Asian Games and the opening match of the series against the West Indies. His lack of runs had raised questions about his place in the playing eleven, particularly with young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting for an opportunity.
Reflecting on his return to form, Samson explained that professional cricketers must continue preparing, training and practising regardless of their recent results. He stressed that players can control their preparation and effort, but cannot always determine the outcome in a format as unpredictable as T20 cricket.
The wicketkeeper batter also highlighted the importance of maintaining an attacking approach rather than becoming overly cautious after a few disappointing innings. According to Samson, his responsibility is to provide the team with a strong start, and he aims to fulfil that role whenever he steps onto the field.
Samson accepted responsibility for his failures, making it clear that he did not intend to blame others for his inability to score runs. His comments reflected his approach to handling pressure while competing for a place in India’s highly competitive batting lineup.
The Ranchi innings continued an encouraging trend in Samson’s performances during 2026. He has scored a half century in every T20I innings in which he has faced at least 15 deliveries this year, demonstrating his ability to make an impact when he spends time at the crease.
However, his latest contribution ultimately went in vain. The West Indies successfully chased India’s target of 250 runs, winning by six wickets with nine deliveries remaining.
Despite the defeat, Samson’s innings offered a reminder of his ability to deliver under pressure as India continue their T20 preparations and assess their batting combinations.
