TEREKHOL: Tightening the screws on lawbreakers with a corrupt past, the vigilance directorate’s anti-corruption branch (ACB) has detained a second police officer for reportedly expecting an Rs 8,000 monthly bribe from a paragliding operator in North Goa to keep their company running smoothly.
Due to his suspected involvement in the case, Tiracol coastal police station head constable Udayraj, also known as Rajumohan Kalangutakar, was placed under custody.
According to sources, the ACB is investigating whether higher-ranking police officers had any involvement in the bribery case. Sanjay Talkar, a suspended head constable, was detained by the ACB last Friday.
Talkar was taken into the custody of the ACB after the sessions court in Panaji denied his appeal for anticipatory release. Based on an allegation made by a paragliding operator, Talkar was the subject of a formal complaint last month.
The operator claimed that Talkar was asking for a payment of Rs 8,000 per month to enable the smooth operation of the business. During the first week of this month, Talkar was put on hold.
The court denied Talkar’s request for anticipatory bail, noting that there was sufficient evidence to convict the applicant and that his involvement in the money-demanding offence would be detrimental to society.
