New Delhi: India captain Shreyas Iyer etched his name into the record books despite his team’s disappointing series against England, becoming the highest run scorer for India in a T20I series played in England.
Iyer achieved the milestone during the fourth T20I at the County Ground in Bristol, where he remained unbeaten on 80 off 49 balls. The innings took his tally to 190 runs in the ongoing five match series, surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s previous Indian record of 171 runs, which came in a three match series against England in 2022.
The Mumbai batter has been India’s standout performer with the bat throughout the series. He began with a fluent 68 in the opening T20I, followed it up with 37 in the second match, managed only five runs in the third game and responded with another unbeaten half century in Bristol to reach the landmark.
Iyer’s consistency has also earned him another notable achievement. His 190 runs are now the highest by any batter in a bilateral T20I series played in England, overtaking South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks, who scored 180 runs against England in 2022. He also moved ahead of Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, England’s Jonny Bairstow and New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips on the all time list.
Overall, Iyer now ranks fourth among the highest run scorers in any T20I series played in England. The record continues to belong to former Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan, who amassed 317 runs during the 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and West Indies great Chris Gayle occupy the second and third positions respectively.
The India skipper also became the first captain in international cricket to register multiple fifty plus scores in a bilateral T20I series in England. Although India’s campaign ended in disappointment with England sealing the series, Iyer’s batting performances remained one of the few positives for the visitors and highlighted his growing influence at the top level in the shortest format.
