New Delhi: Former India spinner Murali Kartik believes Shubman Gill faces one of the biggest tests of his captaincy as India prepare for the two match Test series against Sri Lanka, saying the skipper will always remain under intense scrutiny in Indian cricket.
Gill has led India in nine Tests, recording five victories and three defeats, including a 2–0 series loss to South Africa. While his batting form has remained impressive, recurring injuries have disrupted his availability, raising concerns ahead of another important World Test Championship assignment.
Kartik said he has no doubts about Gill’s ability with the bat, describing him as a class player capable of scoring runs consistently. However, he stressed that fitness remains the captain’s biggest challenge after a series of muscular strains and other injury setbacks.
The former spinner said a captain in India is judged by recent results, reminding Gill that leadership comes with relentless expectations regardless of individual performances. He added that the upcoming series carries significant pressure because India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final depend on improving their position in the standings.
India currently sit fifth in the WTC 2025–27 table, making the Sri Lanka tour a vital opportunity to gain valuable points and revive their red ball campaign.
The first Test begins on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, where Gill will lead a young Indian side seeking to bounce back and strengthen its bid for a place in the World Test Championship final.
