Mapusa: Sporting Clube de Goa’s campaign in the Bahusaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy ended after a 0-1 defeat to Sesa FA at Duler Stadium, here, on Sunday.
It was going to be a tough clash between Goa Pro League champions Sporting and runners-up Sesa.
Sporting needed a win with a huge margin to progress in the competition.
Both the teams started attacking. Sesa had the first to in the very second minute when Sankalp took a shot after a darting run forward but it was denied by Sporting keeper Abhimanyu Singh.
Sporting took time to settle down but found it hard to penetrate inside the Sesa area as their opponents defended in numbers.
At the other end, Sporting survived a scare in the 34th minute as Omkar’s venomous shot rattled the crossbar.
Sporting started the second half with a renewed sense of purpose. Striker Alister Anthony came close after he controlled the ball off a cross from Biswa Darjee but his effort was blocked.
In the 72nd minute, Sesa broke the deadlock when substitute Clencio Pinto won the ball off Joyson Gauncar found the keeper way off his line and struck a long ranger that dipped perfectly inside the goal.
