PANAJI: A day after meeting Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today said that Election Commission of India (ECI) will complete the process of setting up Delimitation Commission before the Code of Conduct (CoC).
“Before CoC comes into force ECI would complete process of setting up Delimitation Comm; confident that before 2027 polls, ST will get political reservation,” said Sawant
According to the Chief Minister, as per the Census 2011, the population of Scheduled Tribes communities is 1,49,275, which is 10.23 per cent. Scheduled Tribes communities in the State are receiving reservations in elections at village panchayats, municipal councils, and Zilla Panchayats (ZP) but not in Legislative Assembly elections.
As of now, no seat in the 40-member Goa assembly is reserved for the ST community, one seat is reserved for the Scheduled Castes (SC) community.
The ST community has been demanding that four out of the 40 seats in the Goa assembly be reserved for them during the 2027 state polls.
