NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil, strongly condemned terrorism, calling it a “grave threat to humanity.” Speaking during the session on ‘Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance’ in Rio de Janeiro, Modi emphasized the urgent need for reforms in global institutions and reiterated India’s commitment to representing the Global South. He welcomed the united stand taken by BRICS nations in condemning the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, calling it an assault not just on India but on all of humanity. Modi stressed that countries that fund, support, or provide safe havens to terrorists must be dealt with in the harshest terms.
Highlighting the inadequacy of global institutions such as the United Nations, IMF, World Bank, and WTO—established in the 20th century—Modi said these bodies are no longer capable of effectively addressing 21st-century challenges, particularly those faced by developing nations. He advocated for a more inclusive, democratic, and multipolar world order and pushed for comprehensive reforms of the UN Security Council to better represent the interests and voices of countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Modi also outlined his vision for BRICS as a key player in reshaping global governance. He proposed the creation of a science and research repository within the BRICS framework to strengthen critical mineral supply chains and called for cooperation on responsible use of artificial intelligence. Emphasizing the group’s strength in diversity and multipolarity, he said BRICS has the potential to lead the way in creating a more balanced global order.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister is expected to address another session focusing on the environment, climate action, and global health. He will highlight India’s efforts and initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, the Global Biofuels Alliance, the International Big Cats Alliance, and Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), all aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive development.
The BRICS joint declaration, adopted during the summit, echoed many of India’s long-standing positions. Paragraph 6 of the declaration made a strong case for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations, including the Security Council, to make it more democratic and representative. It called for increased participation of developing countries in global governance and affirmed the legitimate aspirations of emerging nations like India and Brazil to play a larger role in international affairs.
PM Modi’s statements at the summit underline India’s growing leadership role in global diplomacy. His calls for multilateral reform, counter-terrorism, and support for the Global South reinforce India’s vision of a just, inclusive, and sustainable global order.
