New Delhi: Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy delivered match-winning performances as India chased down a target of 181 against New Zealand in the second T20I in Christchurch on Saturday.
India overcame early setbacks to complete the chase on a challenging surface, with Varma and Reddy playing crucial roles in guiding the visitors towards victory. Sanju Samson managed 14 runs, while young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for just four, putting pressure on India’s batting line-up early in the innings.
Earlier, New Zealand posted 180 for five after recovering from a difficult start. Arshdeep Singh led India’s bowling effort with figures of two for 33, helping restrict the hosts during the early stages of their innings.
New Zealand were in trouble at 41 for three inside the Powerplay before Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs turned the contest around with a decisive fourth-wicket partnership. The pair added 116 runs, providing the foundation for the hosts to reach a competitive total.
Phillips top-scored with 70, displaying aggressive strokeplay to rebuild the innings after the early collapse. Jacobs supported him with an impressive 56, ensuring New Zealand recovered from their shaky start and put pressure on India’s bowlers.
Arshdeep was India’s most successful bowler, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prince Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed one wicket each.
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first, backing his bowling attack to contain New Zealand on the Christchurch surface. Although the hosts recovered strongly through Phillips and Jacobs, India’s batters responded with determination in the chase.
The victory highlighted India’s ability to handle pressure after losing early wickets and gave the team a significant boost in the T20I series.
