MARGAO: Congress today reprimanded the Margao MLA Digamber Kamat for his failure in addressing the traffic congestion in Margao, inspite of the Congress party bestowing upon him the position of the Chief Minister for 5 years.
Congress leader Savio Coutinho questioned whether he will need to be the Prime Minister to lift up the city from the mess he has left Margao in, due to his negligence and indecisiveness.
Coutinho slammed the Margao MLA Digamber Kamat for his failure in completion of the ring road which was planned way back in the late 1980’s.
“Buildings and illegal encroachments have been permitted with the MLA’S blessings, and now the MLA is thinking of constructing a flyover bridge from Victor Hospital to comba railway crossing”, Coutinho charged.
The ring road, running parallel to the railway track was planned with the intention of connecting all the internal roads, to this ring road which would be an important entry and exit for vehicles. The city’s road network is such that, wherever one may want to go, you have to compulsorily pass by the Municipal Building/Garden. The ring road would have avoided this, and hence the city roads would have been less congested.
Construction of a flyover bridge will be of no help absolutely, in tackling the traffic congestion seen along Margao roads, and will be a total waste of public fund’s, he said. It is our ernest appeal to the double engine Sarkar to examine the usefulness of incurring such huge expenditure; and suggested that the same fund’s could be utilized for the construction of the much needed flyover at comba level crossing, he added.
Coutinho while addressing the media at Margao today, along with Clifford Dias, Mathin Karol, Aneil Alvares, Robert Vaz and Camilo Camara, charged that the Margao MLA inspite of enjoying top positions failed to himself provide the much needed multi level parking facility, and sabotaged others from doing so. We find traffic congestion on every road in the city due to the absence of adequate parking, which compelled people to park vehicles on the road sides, thus hampering the smooth flow of traffic he said.
Mathin Karol stated that without any consideration of availability of parking facility, super markets are approved along busy roads, and the road widening area is used for parking he said. Several shopping malls have come up in the city. While on paper/plans basement or stilt parking is shown, in reality, these parking lots are converted into store rooms or are used to house power generators, he said.
Our MLA has very sadly worked only for his personal greed and never took the development of Margao as his priority, Clifford Dias said while calling upon the people of Margao to wake up and understand this fact.
The Congress Party warned the government and the PWD to propose projects based on its usefulness to the public and not to suit the needs of the Margao MLA, and said that legal forums shall be approached if need be.
