QUEPEM: In a unique initiative, a traffic control committee comprising students and parents was formed by the School principal of Pope John XXIII High School, Quepem. This is being done to facilitate the smooth movement of traffic around school premises.
There has been a lot of traffic chaos and congestion in front of the school area in the morning, sometimes leading to over 500 meters stretch of traffic jams making it extremely difficult and unsafe for parents to drop their children at School.
A parent, Allwyn Menezes, said that the parent volunteers team came forward and decided to take action; very quickly, they studied and analyzed the problem and came up with a brilliant drop & go solution. They made the best use of the available resources, came up with simple ideas, and implemented them.
Further, Menezes said Parent Traffic Volunteers would come in the morning at 7:00 am and swing into action. Including the mother of younger students. Everyone came with one aim to assist and make a safer passage for students to get to School and for parents to drop their children stress-free School. Concerned and willing Parents whose children used to come even on School buses also came forward to work together as a volunteer team.
Damiao Rodrigues, another parent, said, ‘ Seeing the parents’ willingness, many local authorities like Traffic Police & Traffic Cell Quepem offered assistance and put barricades wherever they were needed. Upon parents’ request, heavy vehicular traffic is now halted along the roads passing along the School during peak hours.
Another parent named Jennifer Fariad, who offered her time for this good work, said after a few days of hard work and persistence, a small team of about 12 parents managed to decongest traffic by over 95% and also created a safer environment for students coming to Sschool
