New Delhi: India’s men’s badminton team delivered a commanding display to secure a place in the semifinals of the Thomas Cup, with rising star Ayush Shetty playing a decisive role in the quarterfinal victory over Chinese Taipei.
Reflecting on the match, Ayush acknowledged the added pressure of the knockout stage but said the early advantage provided by his teammates made a significant difference. Entering his match with a 2-0 lead, he played with greater freedom and confidence against Lin Chun-Yi, the reigning All England champion.
Ayush sealed the tie with a straight-game victory, winning 21-16, 21-17 through an aggressive and controlled approach. He focused on maintaining attacking play and limiting his opponent’s opportunities, executing his strategy effectively to close out the contest.
Earlier, Lakshya Sen set the tone with a remarkable comeback win against world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen. After losing the opening game, Lakshya rallied to claim the next two, demonstrating composure and a more instinctive approach in crucial moments to give India a 1-0 lead.
The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty extended the advantage. Despite being pushed to a decider, they dominated the final game to secure a 2-0 cushion for the team.
Ayush then delivered the finishing blow with a composed display, even as his opponent attempted a late comeback. With the winning point secured, the Indian squad erupted in celebration, marking a significant step forward in their campaign.
The victory has reignited memories of India’s historic 2022 triumph, with the team once again showing belief in its ability to challenge for the title.
