New Delhi: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has issued a clarification following widespread discussion over his recent remarks on the lack of recognition for India’s bronze medal finish at the Thomas Cup 2026.
The Indian doubles star, who played a key role in the country’s podium finish in Horsens, Denmark, said his comments were not driven by a desire for personal fame or special treatment, but were intended to highlight the need for greater appreciation of achievements across all sports.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Satwik said he respects every athlete who brings glory to India and clarified that his message was about encouraging a culture where sporting achievements are celebrated irrespective of the discipline.
He said athletes dedicate years of sacrifice and hard work to represent the country on the global stage, and added that when such milestones receive little public attention, it can feel discouraging not only for current players but also for young athletes aspiring to compete for India in the future.
Satwik emphasised that athletes are not demanding prize money or grand celebrations, but simply acknowledgement that their performances are being noticed and valued by the country. He also appealed for equal enthusiasm and support towards all sports whenever Indian athletes compete internationally.
The comments came days after Satwik openly expressed disappointment during an interview over the muted response to India’s latest Thomas Cup success. Referring to India’s title winning campaign in 2022 and the recent bronze medal finish, he said there had been little change in public awareness or recognition of the Indian badminton team’s achievements.
The statement has since sparked wider conversations around how non cricket sports are covered and celebrated in India, with several fans and athletes voicing support for Satwik’s call for greater recognition of achievements across disciplines.
Thomas Cup is regarded as one of the most prestigious team events in international badminton, and India’s recent podium finish added another significant milestone to the country’s growing success in the sport.
