PANAJI: North Goa MP Shripad Naik said that he will not contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2029.
“Next Lok Sabha election party will have a new candidate to contest the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Before anyone questions why I should be considered to contest the seventh time Lok Sabha election,” he said.
He further informed that he has already decided to not contest the next Lok Sabha election and the party should identify a new candidate.
“I will work to nurture the new candidate for the next Lok Sabha and that is the reason I have taken this decision,” he added.
Naik said that there has been a question raised about the reason behind selecting the same candidate.
“We have young leadership and youths have to be given an opportunity,” he added.
There won’t be a question of saying no to the new leadership; instead, we should voluntarily retreat,” Naik stated.
He claimed that if there had been any anti-incumbency sentiment in North Goa, his ticket would have been rejected.
“People of North Goa have always supported and elected me,” stated Naik.
Naik, a prominent member of the Bhandari Samaj and five-time MP from North Goa, was included on the initial list of 195 contenders following the names’ clearance by the PM Narendra Modi-chaired central election committee.
