PANAJI: In a scathing attack, the Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday said that the BJP government has failed to prevent road accidents, despite more than 1300 people having died in the last six years and many youths among them.
Reacting to the fatal accidents reported in the last few days, Alemao said that the insensitive BJP government is busy diverting the pressing issues on the name of religion and caste, and has given less importance to the lives of the public.
“BJP government has failed miserably in preventing road accidents and identifying their causes. Fatal accidents are reported daily, claiming lives. It is alarming to see people dying in road accidents at an alarming rate, yet this government seems insensitive to the issue,” he said.
He said that in 2023, Union minister for road, transport and highways Nitin Gadkari had announced Rs 100 crore funds for Goa to remove road black spots and to improve road safety, however this government has failed.
“If the government has removed these black spots then it should tell the public,” Alemao said, adding that bad quality of roads are also causing road accidents.
“Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on several occasions promised to mend the potholes. But till today there are several roads with potholes, which are one of the causes for road accidents. Jet patcher machines brought to mend these potholes and Whatsapp service to report potholes have seemed to be non-operational,” Alemao pointed out.
“There is an urgent need for effective measures to ensure road safety and hold those responsible accountable. In the last six years more than 1300 people have lost their lives in road accidents,” Alemao said, adding that the government should conduct study on road designs and measures to stop accidents.
