New Delhi: India enjoyed another successful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Gulveer Singh scripting history by becoming the first Indian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m. The day also saw silver for Harjinder Kaur in weightlifting, while Indian boxers Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh booked semifinal spots to guarantee at least bronze medals.
Gulveer produced a sensational finish in the men’s 10,000m final, clocking 27:49.78 to secure the silver medal after staying in contention throughout the race. Australia’s Ky Robinson won gold in 27:48.93, while David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man claimed bronze in 27:50.28. Gulveer’s achievement marked a historic milestone for Indian athletics and also ended a long streak, as the event’s podium featured neither a Kenyan nor a Ugandan athlete for the first time since 1986.
In weightlifting, Harjinder Kaur claimed silver in the women’s 69kg category with a total lift of 227kg. She successfully lifted 101kg in the snatch before producing an impressive clean and jerk performance, including a Games record lift of 123kg, and finishing with 126kg on her final attempt. Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau won gold with a Games record total of 240kg, while Australia’s Nya Phebe Hayman secured bronze with 218kg.
India’s boxing campaign continued to gather momentum. Preeti Pawar dominated Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde with a unanimous 5-0 victory in the women’s 54kg quarterfinals, guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal. Despite conceding a height advantage, Preeti controlled the contest with aggressive movement and sharp combinations.
Jadumani Singh also confirmed a podium finish after defeating Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale by a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the men’s 55kg quarterfinals. The Indian boxer controlled the bout from the opening round to secure his place in the semifinals.
However, it was a mixed day in other events. Kapil Pokhariya bowed out of the men’s 90kg boxing competition after losing by unanimous decision to Scotland’s Robert McNulty in the quarterfinals.
In athletics, Pooja’s Commonwealth Games debut ended after she failed to clear 1.82m in the women’s high jump final, with rain disrupting the competition. Meanwhile, swimmer Srihari Nataraj narrowly missed a place in the men’s 100m backstroke final after finishing 12th overall in the semifinals with a timing of 55.52 seconds.
With historic performances in athletics, another silver in weightlifting, and more guaranteed medals in boxing, India continued its impressive run in Glasgow as the Commonwealth Games moved into the latter stages of competition.
