MARGAO: South Goa recorded 1,142 motor vehicle accidents between January and October 2026, marking a 12% increase over the 1,019 accidents reported during the corresponding period in 2025, according to a comparative analysis released by the South Goa Traffic Police.
Despite the rise in road accidents, the district witnessed a marginal decline in fatal accidents, which dropped from 102 in 2025 to 100 in 2026. The number of fatalities also decreased from 106 to 102 during the ten-month period.
However, the rise in grievous accidents remains a major concern. Such accidents increased from 154 in 2025 to 197 in 2026, registering a significant rise of 27.9%.
The trend was also evident in October 2026, when South Goa reported 129 road accidents against 104 during October 2025, marking a 24% increase.
On a positive note, fatal accidents during October declined from 10 to six, while the number of fatalities fell from 10 to seven. Grievous accidents, however, increased from 24 to 26 during the month.
The comparative figures point to a worrying rise in road accidents and serious injuries across South Goa, even as fatalities have registered a slight decline. The increase in grievous accidents highlights the continuing need for stronger road safety measures, traffic enforcement and greater awareness among motorists.
