PANAJI: In Panaji, Goa, a strict special campaign against drunk driving that took place between May 31 and June 2, 2024, between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM, produced noteworthy outcomes.
Rahul Gupta, IPS, the Superintendent of Police for Traffic, has reported that during this period of increased enforcement, 249 cases of drunk driving were booked. This represents the greatest number of DUI cases that have been scheduled in a three-day span.
A total of 258 infractions related to intoxicated driving were noted between May 31 and June 2, 2024. This campaign against intoxicated driving is a component of continuous initiatives to improve regional traffic safety.
Notably, a startling 2124 drunk driving cases have been booked between January 1st and June 2nd, 2024. This is a notable increase over the 509 cases that were recorded during the same period last year.
Serious legal repercussions follow such infractions. According to section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a person found driving under the influence of drugs or with alcohol and with a blood alcohol content greater than 30 mg/100 ml faces a maximum six-month jail sentence, a fine of Rs. 10,000, or both for the first offence. Even more severe punishments apply to repeat offenders, who may be imprisoned for up to two years, fined Rs. 15,000, or both.
